Honda ZR-V Hybrid SUV Launching Soon in India

However, the upcoming Honda ZR-V hybrid would certainly be its most interesting product launch in recent times – not because of its expected sales numbers but due to the fact that with the ZR-V hybrid, we now get a proper premium SUV offering from Honda.

With an expected price point that would place the ZR-V hybrid on par with a Skoda Kodiaq, well above even the likes of the City and the Elevate, it is an important vehicle for several reasons. Having concentrated heavily on utility and reliability for its mainstream offerings in recent times, Honda seems to be trying to prove to its customers that it knows how to develop premium vehicles as well.

Powered by a 2.0-litre e:HEV strong hybrid engine similar to the one found on the international versions of the Civic, it produces about 180bhp and would probably concentrate on delivering a refined and responsive driving experience rather than a powerful one. Moreover, its Civic-based chassis and multi-link rear suspension make it a potentially driver-focused premium SUV at a time when such SUVs are becoming increasingly rare.

Therein, however, lies the crux of the problem for Honda. With an estimated launch price close to Rs. 50 lakh, the ZR-V will certainly not come packed with the customary premium SUV offerings expected of such a price category. There would be no third row, no diesel motor, and probably even no all-wheel drive option.

This is because the ZR-V could end up being more about brand-building than selling volumes. Even if the car does not sell many units, it could help Honda in improving its brand equity in the country and reconnect with its enthusiasts who still remember the good old Accord and the CR-V.
