New Honda Prelude Coming to India This May – Full Details Inside

Prelude is just one of the many new models that Honda plans to launch in India by the end of the decade

Given that there has been increased attention paid to the Indian market, Honda intends to introduce a total of ten new models before 2030. The first launch among the above models will most likely occur this May and this will be the Honda Prelude. After 20 years since its previous iteration, the Honda Prelude re-emerged in its sixth generation and has become available globally once again.

The latest Honda Prelude is a two-door coupe model that is derived from the eleventh-generation Honda Civic sedan which has not been launched in India because of a lack of demand for global C-segment sedans. Honda Prelude is 4,520 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,355 mm high. Its wheelbase measures 2,605 mm and such a size will not pose any problems when it comes to maneuverability on Indian roads. However, its ground clearance measuring only 135 mm might become an issue.

The Honda hybrid system on the Prelude is identical to the one on the Civic e:HEV. This hybrid system consists of a “LFC” 2.0 litre direct injection petrol engine coupled to two electric motors, the traction motor and generator, both mounted inline to the engine’s crankshaft. The petrol engine offers a maximum output of 104 kW/139 hp and 182 Nm of torque, whereas the traction motor, referred to as the “H4”, outputs 135 kW/181 hp and 315 Nm of torque.

There are seven selectable stages of regeneration for the car using paddles found behind the steering wheel. Unlike its predecessors, the Prelude lacks a conventional multi-ratio transmission or a CVT. Instead, it has a virtual eight-speed gearbox that simulates a manual car. The feature is known by Honda as “S+ Shift”. As soon as it is activated with the help of a huge button found in the centre console, the paddles that are responsible for the braking become simulated shifting paddles; the right paddle shifts up, while the left one simulates a down shift with rev matching.

The Honda Prelude achieves a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 8.2 seconds and attains a top speed of 188 km/h. From these metrics, we can see that the Honda Prelude is not an extremely sporty vehicle. It is also very fuel-efficient since it achieves a fuel consumption rate of 23.6 km/l according to the Japanese WLTC. The WLTP standard states that its fuel consumption is 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers. The hybrid coupe holds a total capacity of 40 liters in its fuel tank.

The Honda Prelude is manufactured together with the Civic Type R in Honda’s Yorii Plant, located in Japan. The company will import the car in India as a CBU, which would be priced around Rs. 75 lakh (ex-showroom).
