Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG will be in competition with the Tata Nexon CNG and Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG in the home country market

Similarly to Tata Motors, Mahindra is also looking forward to providing a variety of engine types for their famous SUV range. As of now, the company produces its SUVs in diesel, petrol, and pure electric options. Now, they plan to come up with another variant – CNG.

As most of Mahindra’s cars are big-sized SUVs, the company did not offer an option with CNG until today. Yet, due to the popularity of natural gas among customers, who buy more than 20% of new cars in India, the manufacturer decided to introduce CNG in its lineup as well, seeing a lot of potential there. The first car, which will get CNG engines, should be the XUV 3XO.

Obviously, the latest model of XUV 3XO CNG would be derived from one of its petrol variants. The manufacturer of XUV 3XO petrol provides its customers with two types of engines, both of which are 1.2 litre MPFI and DI. The former delivers power of 82 kW (110 hp) and torque of 200 Nm, while the latter delivers 96 kW (129 hp) and torque of 230 Nm.

The MPFI engine will most likely be used in the XUV 3XO CNG as it will be technically easier and cost-effective. There will be slight reductions in power and torque figures. The car can either be fitted with two small CNG tanks in the trunk space or one large tank under the trunk. As such, the luggage space of 295 litres provided by the petrol version is too small; hence, Mahindra would like to maximise it as much as possible.

The petrol version comes with two types of gearboxes: six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. However, for the MPFI and DI versions, there will probably be no provision of an automatic gearbox, and only the manual gearbox will be provided. The trim options in the CNG variant will also be fewer than those in the petrol variant.

It is predicted that Mahindra may introduce the XUV 3XO CNG model even by the end of 2026. The cost of this model may vary between Rs. 8.35 to 8.45 lakh ex-showroom.
