New VW ID. Polo Breaks Cover – Affordable EV with 454 Km Range

The Volkswagen ID. Polo sits on the MEB+ platform, featuring 37 kWh and 52 kWh batteries, claiming to offer a maximum range of 454 kilometers per charge cycle.

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Polo – the electric variant of one of its best-selling nameplates globally. With more than 20 million sales in its lifespan, the Polo has now entered an exciting phase that revolves solely around electric mobility. Pre-ordering for the ID. Polo is now open in Germany, with the lowest trim available for 24,995 euros (Rs. 27.65 lakh) and the ID. Polo Life powered by the 155 kW engine available for 33,795 euros (Rs. 37.38 lakh).

The ID. Polo features the MEB+ architecture and will be available in three power options – 114 horsepower, 132.7 horsepower, and 208 horsepower. The two smaller engines will be equipped with a 37 kWh LFP battery and offer up to 329 km of WLTP range and can be charged from 10% to 80% within 23 minutes using a DC fast charging unit. However, the higher 155 kW engine will feature a 52 kWh NMC battery, providing a range of up to 454 km and charging within 24 minutes at a DC fast charger.

All models receive DC fast-charging capability as standard, which is notable considering that most low-end EVs still reserve the ability to charge at such a high level only for their higher trim models. In terms of measurements, the ID. Polo stands 4,053 mm long, 1,816 mm wide, and 1,530 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. Despite its small size, owing to its conversion into MEB+, the car gains significantly more space inside.

The boot space capacity has increased by 25% to 441 liters while the rear seat capacity when folded amounts to 1,240 liters. The new vehicle’s interior design revolves around its unique concept that includes the incorporation of the 26 cm-sized Digital Cockpit within the driver’s line of vision and a 33 cm infotainment screen placed centrally in the dash. The physical buttons for basic features have also been retained.

The ID. Polo has a retro display mode that imitates the style of the instrument cluster of the Golf I facelift version. In addition, there are three variants of the equipment lines available in the new Polo which include the Trend, Life, and Style variants. The Trend variant gets features such as LED lights, automatic climate control, and DC charging capabilities.

Leading in the range with IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps, 3D LED tail lamps, sport comfort seats, two-zone automatic air conditioning, and the extended ID. Light bar that extends into the front doors to alert the driver about any incoming vehicle users before opening the door. Optional features include the 425 watts Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic glass roof, and the pneumatic massage seat option for the 12-way front seats.

Vehicle-to-Load charging comes as a standard feature, with up to 3.6 kW supplied through the 230V socket or charger in the car cabin. More variants of the power train and the base model at 24,995 euros should be available in the German market by summer. The European rollout will be some time after that.
