Maruti Victoris Mileage Test Shows What You Can Really Expect on Indian Roads
While Maruti Suzuki’s new Victoris is certainly generating plenty of buzz with its bold SUV design, its availability with strong powertrains, and its usability, there is only one thing on most Indian buyers’ minds: what kind of real-world fuel economy is it likely to return? We have now tested the SUV in real-world conditions, which certainly provides much more insight into what buyers can actually expect from the Victoris. The car we tested was the Victoris ZXi+ (O) AWD Auto, which features a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild hybrid technology and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. This car makes 102 bhp and 139 Nm of peak torque. While it is not exactly tuned for high performance, on paper at least, it is claimed that the AWD Auto variant is capable of delivering 19.07 kmpl.

In the real world, though, the facts are slightly different. According to CarWale’s mileage test, the Victoris averaged 14.78 kmpl in the city and 20.24 kmpl on the highway. This gave it an average of 16.1 kmpl. Though this is much lower than the claimed average, it is far from disappointing for an all-wheel drive petrol automatic SUV. In fact, for those who drive in the city, through traffic, and occasionally venture onto the highway, this average seems quite reasonable.
What this figure is actually indicating is that the Victoris is not trying to be the absolute mileage leader in the segment in this particular form. Rather, it is trying to be more practical in terms of offering comfort, SUV-ness, and fuel efficiency together. The highway figure of over 20 kmpl is excellent and indicates that the car can be smooth and efficient over long distances too. The city figure, although lower, is still acceptable in the petrol automatic SUV with AWD equipment
Of course, the buyer should also remember that this is only one of the variants. The Victoris line-up is also offered in standard petrol, CNG, and strong hybrid variants. On paper, the strongest fuel efficiency champion of the lot is the strong hybrid, which can achieve up to 28.65 km/pl, followed by the CNG variant, which can achieve 27.02 km/kg. So, if fuel efficiency is your topmost priority, then the test car, an AWD auto, may not be the smartest of choices in the line-up

On the whole, the Maruti Victoris AWD Automatic offers decent practicality in terms of fuel efficiency, especially for someone looking for a stylish, family-friendly SUV that offers a bit of extra grip on poorer roads and highways. It may not match the official claim in real-world usage, but the 16.1 kmpl combined economy is still a decent showing for what this vehicle offers. While your usage may be primarily urban and fuel economy a significant factor, if you’re looking for a jack-of-all-trades, the tested Victoris AWD still does a pretty good job.
