Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Debuts at ₹36 Lakh – India Launch Could Shake SUV Market

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Debuts at ₹36 Lakh

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Launched in Thailand – Affordable Rugged SUV India Might Get Soon

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has now officially been launched in Thailand, and it already looks like one of the most interesting rugged SUVs Toyota has launched in quite some time. If it is launched in India, it could perfectly fill the gap between the lifestyle SUV buyer and the off-road enthusiast looking for Toyota ruggedness without going all the way to the Toyota Fortuner or Land Cruiser.

Toyota has launched the Land Cruiser FJ at the 2026 Bangkok Motor Show in a single fully loaded 4WD variant. The Thailand-spec Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is priced at 1,269,000 Thai Baht, which is equivalent to ₹36.40 lakh. This makes the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ instantly interesting, as it is the cheapest in the Land Cruiser lineup worldwide. Instead of trying to be a luxury SUV, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has chosen to be simple and rugged, and this is why it looks the way it does.

In the context of the design of the Land Cruiser FJ, the car has a retro-modern look. This is in the sense that the car has the upright stance and boxy SUV look and road presence that one would associate with a proper off-roader, but Toyota has also given the car a clean and modern look. This is not the look of a car that has been designed as a crossover intended for urban use. This car looks like it has been designed with a purpose, and this in itself will make the car sell well in markets like India.

The major highlight of the Land Cruiser FJ is what lies underneath the car. In this context, the Land Cruiser FJ has Toyota’s IMV-0 ladder frame platform. This is important in the context of the car because this is not a monocoque city SUV designed to look like it has off-road capability. A ladder frame platform is generally associated with ruggedness, reliability, and off-road capability. According to the report, Toyota has developed the platform with the intention of minimizing development costs, rear-biased drivetrain, and off-road capability.

The power is provided by a 2.7-litre petrol motor coupled to a six-speed automatic gearbox. This motor churns out 160bhp of power and 246Nm of torque. While these numbers might not seem segment-leading in an era where turbocharged petrol and diesel SUVs are offering high numbers, it seems like Toyota is prioritizing reliability and long-term durability rather than outright performance. This is something that aligns perfectly with the Land Cruiser brand name. While it might not be the fastest SUV in its segment, it is likely to find takers who need something that is going to last them long rather than something that is going to blow them away in terms of outright numbers.

What is exciting about the prospect of it coming to India is that there is an existing gap in the market that Toyota is missing. Right now, there is nothing in the range of ₹20 lakh to ₹35 lakh apart from SUVs like the Hycross and Hilux. The Fortuner is in its own segment, but it is priced so high that it is likely to find takers in other segments as well. This is where the Land Cruiser FJ could slot in perfectly.

If Toyota decides to bring this to India at the right price point, I believe that this Land Cruiser FJ has the potential to become a major competitor to many monocoque SUVs from Mahindra, Tata, Jeep, and Hyundai. The major selling points for this vehicle wouldn’t be based on its looks and its brand value, but on its actual SUV features and its ability to appeal to people emotionally through its Land Cruiser nameplate. I believe that this is an SUV that Indians would immediately take notice of because it is practical for use, looks great for city dwellers, and is rugged for adventure seekers.
